INTRODUCTION

Healthcare was a major topic in the 2012 Presidential race and most Americans, political party aside, agree healthcare in the US is currently stuck in the ‘dark ages’ and needs reform. Not only is our healthcare system antiquated, but the US ranks surprisingly low when it comes to healthcare measures. In one study, the US ranked last or next-to-last on all five dimensions of a high performance health system: measuring quality care, access, efficiency, equity and long, healthy and productive lives. The Netherlands, the UK, Australia, Germany, New Zealand, and Canada all ranked higher than the US.

When it comes to healthcare IT—which is most certainly in the dark ages—what is it going to take to make major advancements? What will it take to bring healthcare IT up to speed with other major top-ranking industries in the US such as banking, retail, etc.?

Over the next week, we will be looking at past, present and potential future disruptors in healthcare IT; we will explore new IT innovations that have the power to improve our broken healthcare system as well as the challenges that stand in the way.
